Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

Assessment and personalised management of IBS symptoms — abdominal pain, bloating, and altered bowel habit.

Overview

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common disorder affecting the large intestine. It causes real physical symptoms — it is not “in your head” — even though standard tests such as blood work, endoscopy or imaging typically appear normal. IBS is thought to result from a combination of abnormal gut muscle contractions, heightened sensitivity of the nervous system in the gut, low-grade inflammation, and changes in gut bacteria.

Common signs and symptoms

  • Abdominal pain, cramping or bloating, often related to bowel movements
  • Diarrhoea, constipation, or an alternating pattern of both
  • Excess gas
  • Mucus in the stool

Because these symptoms can also occur in other, more serious conditions, IBS is generally a diagnosis made after ruling out other causes — particularly if symptoms start after age 50, or are accompanied by unexplained weight loss, bleeding, or a family history of bowel disease.

What to expect at A Bit of Life Clinic

We start with a detailed history and examination, and arrange further testing — such as blood tests, stool studies, or endoscopy — where needed to rule out other conditions before confirming an IBS diagnosis. Management is built around your specific symptom pattern: dietary adjustments (including guidance on low-FODMAP approaches where appropriate), management of stress and gut-brain interaction, and medication where needed to target pain, bloating, or bowel habit. Follow-up ensures the plan is actually working, not just prescribed once and forgotten.
